Grading for Learning

One of our primary goals at North Jr. High School is to transition to a system of grading that allows for consistency among all teachers in one content area/grade level, ensure accuracy in our reporting, make grading meaningful, and support the ultimate goal of student learning.

Weighted Grades

At North Jr. High, we believe that grades should clearly communicate to students, families, and teachers whether students have mastered the Indiana Academic Standards in each content area. To do this, grades are weighted in a way that emphasizes assessments over homework and classwork (what students know over their practice opportunities). Grades are weighted as follows:

  • Assessments (quiz, test, project, labs, essay, etc) = 70%
  • Daily work (classwork, homework, etc) = 30%

Test Retakes

When a student does not achieve their maximum potential on a particular assessment, they may reassess over that standard(s) as long as these conditions are met:

  • The student received below 80% on their first assessment. Students that receive below 80% can retest to increase their grade up to 80%.
  • The student must have no scores of 0% in the gradebook. 0% is assigned when a student does not successfully attempt a homework assignment.
  • The student successfully completes an extra re-learning assignment, as assigned by the teacher.
  • The student has scheduled a reassessment with the teacher, by turning in a retake ticket form.
  • The student has completed all of the above steps within two weeks of receiving their first assessment score.

It is NJHS policy that a student is allowed at least one retake of each assessment when the above process is used. It is the student’s responsibility to initiate this process. We provide this opportunity to students because we believe our students need to learn the content, even if they did not learn the content on the first attempt.

Note: Students may not have the opportunity to reassess over oral presentations or projects.
